When is it time to replace a boiler?

As a homeowner, there are many pieces of equipment around the home that you need to keep a close eye on to make sure they are working properly.

John Trotter, a veteran Enercare technician in Southern Ontario has serviced hundreds of boilers throughout his career.

“If you have a boiler, it needs to be serviced regularly, just like your car,” said John Trotter. “Even the best boilers will eventually wear out and need replacing, but regular maintenance will likely increase the lifespan of the boiler.”

It may be difficult for homeowners to determine when a boiler needs to be replaced but there are some signs to look out for.

Environment Changes

Probably the most obvious sign that something is going wrong with a boiler is some or all of the rooms in your home no longer feel comfortable. You are finding it difficult to get a room at the right warmth or coolness. If temperature control is an on-going issue, considered having a trained expert in to inspect the equipment.

Longevity

If you know how old your boiler is that will give you some indication as to whether it is getting close to having to be replaced. The best boilers have a lengthy life span, but they too will eventually fail.

The type of boiler will also be a factor in how long it will last. Cast iron boilers have a reputation for lasting many years while other types will usually average at least 15 years. If you are not sure of the age of the boiler you may want to have a qualified professional assess it. This expert can tell you the approximate age of the boiler, what condition it is in and perform any required maintenance.

Cost Increases

Another warning sign that you may be running into boiler problems is when you see an unexpected increase in your energy bills. This may mean your boiler is no longer functioning efficiently. Also, take note of how often you have to get your boiler serviced. This may be another sign that the boiler is reaching the end of its lifespan and no longer functioning properly, and replacement might be the best option.

Physical Boiler Signs

You may notice that black soot is beginning to build up on the burners, or you may see the gas burner flames are yellow. What this could indicate that the boiler is creating carbon monoxide because the fuel is not burning properly. This can be potentially dangerous and is a definite indicator that you need to call in your boiler service expert immediately or inform your gas company.
