Door-to-Door Sales

Enercare is committed to ensuring consumers are properly informed when responding to door-to-door sales. To help promote consumer protection, Enercare has strongly encouraged the development of sensible laws that safeguard consumers’ rights.

There are some guests you do not want in your home, including aggressive door-to-door furnace, water heater and other home services salespeople looking to take advantage of a homeowner’s goodwill. These salespeople may try to pressure you into making on-the-spot decisions and can be evasive in answering questions about why they have come or who they represent. Often these sales agents pose as “inspectors” who need to “check” your equipment.

Enercare has for years worked with various government ministries and regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, to develop laws and educate consumers. Enercare supports all laws that provide consumers with transparency, safety and control during the process of buying home services. Enercare believes that the ban on certain door-to-door sales currently being proposed by municipalities across Ontario will raise the standard our industry should be held to; these changes are good for Ontario consumers and good for our industry.

Enercare, government agencies and utilities never promote the sale or exchange of water heaters, furnaces or other home services products at your door.

The Consumer Protection Act (Ontario) is on your side and was recently amended to increase protection for water heater sales. Consumers now have a 20-day cooling off period after signing a water heater contract with a door-to-door salesperson, and companies are required to wait until those 20 days have passed before installing a new water heater. However, Enercare does not believe the current legislation goes far enough to adequately protect Ontario consumers from unscrupulous salespeople. Enercare has heard from its customers and is aware of those who continue to flout the law. Enercare strongly supports the current efforts to more effectively strengthen consumer protection from door-to-door sales in the home services industry.
