Protect your Property with Plumbing Rebates

Heavy rain, melting snow and harsh weather can cause an overflow of storm-water — more than some drainage and sewage systems can handle. Water damage caused by sewage backup in your home can cause health concerns, weeks (sometimes months), of hassle, and costly renovations to your home.

Municipalities across Ontario have already identified drainage systems that need retrofitting and invested funds toward replacements. However, as a homeowner, you must take necessary precautions to minimize your risk of experiencing sewage backup in your home during a flood.

What is a Backwater Valve?

The installation of a backwater valve allows the sewage water from your sinks, tubs and toilets to flow out while preventing sewage from flowing back into your home during severe flooding conditions. This mechanism helps minimize the potential for water damage to your property. When the water levels rise and attempt to re-enter your home, the backwater valve will close and sewage will continue to flow out instead of back into your home.

Backwater valves are not always installed in new home builds and the homes may have limited plumbing systems not conducive to smooth drainage. The good news is that many Ontario homeowners can qualify for several plumbing rebates and eligible grant programs offered by the Government of Canada on the installation of backwater valves by a licensed Plumber.

What is a Sump Pump?

In many residential areas where flooding is common, sump pumps are installed in the lowest level of the home to pump out excess water beneath your home or water table. The sump pump minimizes the chances of water damage to your home and is an excellent way to protect your property from flooding.

What is a Weeping Tile?

A weeping tile collects underground water using pipes with slits inside it. These slits gather and releases underground water into a main sewer line.

Since weeping tiles are costly and difficult to replace, homeowners with weeping tiles installed may qualify for larger rebates. Check with your city to learn more about eligible rebates.

Installing or repairing a backwater valve, sump pump or weeping tiles helps prevent water from entering your home, but there are other factors that can potentially cause flooding and water damage to your home. It’s important to have a qualified and licensed plumber complete a thorough inspection of your property to ensure your house is safe from damage.

How Do I Qualify for Plumbing Rebates?

Ontario homeowners can qualify for several plumbing rebates through the Canadian government, and can claim more rebates through city and regional toilet rebate programs. There are also rebates available to those who have already completed installations. See chart below for details:

Application procedures vary according to region. Some limitations may apply and you may be required to keep proof of purchase and receipts to be eligible.

Tip: If you are planning to do a new installation, be sure to have the necessary permits. You must also contact the city to do an inspection.
