Get Cooling Exactly Where It’s Needed with a Ductless Split System

Ductless air conditioners (also called mini-split systems) are a great option if you need AC but don’t have or can’t install ductwork. They can even provide secondary cooling to a single room or area, such as a new addition to your home not connected to ductwork or a space that needs a little extra cool breeze.

Flexible Zoned Cooling

Ductless ACs are available as single- or multi-zone systems, meaning you can cool one room or many — with a variety of wall, floor and ceiling-mounted units to meet any need.

Easy Installation

A mini-split AC system can be added to your home without having to open walls and add or modify ductwork, reducing installation time and costs.

Year-round Comfort

Combining a heat pump with a ductless AC lets you heat and cool your home year-round with just one HVAC system — perfect for sunrooms, garages and other hard-to-heat spaces.

How Does a Ductless AC System Work?

A ductless air conditioner has two main components:

  • An outdoor unit that contains the compressor, condenser coil and fan
  • An indoor unit that houses the evaporator coil and blower fan

The two units are connected by a copper conduit that also houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing and a condensate drain.

A ductless AC cools only the room where the indoor unit is installed. Depending on the size of your home and how many rooms you want to cool, you may have multiple indoor units (also called “heads”) powered by the single outdoor unit. The indoor units come in many shapes and sizes, including wall-mounted versions, floor consoles and ceiling cassettes.

Ductless AC units do not sit in your window or plug into a wall outlet — they are wired just like a central AC system, but without the need to install any ductwork. That makes them a great choice for adding cooling to an older home that is heated by a boiler. Because a ductless air conditioning system uses refrigerant and is wired into your home’s electrical panel, you’re required to have a licensed professional install it.
