A greener solution for heating and cooling

A heat pump is an efficient system that can help keep your home cool in summer and provide heating support during milder conditions. In Alberta, heat pumps are generally best suited to shoulder seasons and are often paired with a furnace or other heating system during colder periods.

Compared with some traditional systems, heat pumps can offer several benefits to Alberta homeowners.

Energy reduction

Heat pumps move heat instead of generating it, which can help reduce overall energy use in certain conditions.

Environmental benefits

By operating on electricity rather than burning fuel, heat pumps can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency compared with some conventional systems.

Comfort

In addition to cooling, heat pumps can help manage indoor humidity during cooling mode, supporting a more comfortable indoor environment during warmer weather.

The three types of air source heat pumps

The right heat pump depends on your home’s layout, existing HVAC system, and the areas you want to heat or cool. Enercare offers several air-source heat pump configurations in Alberta.

How does a heat pump work?

Heat pumps don’t create heat—instead, they move it.

  • In summer, the system pulls heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors, providing cooling similar to an air conditioner.
  • In cooler weather, the process reverses and the heat pump transfers heat from the outdoor air into your home.

Because less heat is available in very cold air, air-source heat pumps are generally most effective during milder conditions. In Alberta, they are often used when outdoor temperatures are moderate and paired with a backup heat source—such as a furnace—during colder weather.

Central/hybrid heat pump system

For homeowners looking to heat and cool their entire home

Cooling operation

  1. In cooling mode, the heat pump works just like an air conditioner by first removing unwanted heat from the home.
  2. The heated refrigerant flows towards the outdoor unit to get cooled.
  3. Like in an air conditioner system, the cooler refrigerant flows through the indoor coil, cooling the indoor air while absorbing the heat. This process is repeated to cool the home.

Heating operation

  1. In the wintertime, the cycle is reversed where the heat pump pulls heat from the outdoor air and is absorbed by the refrigerant.
  2. The heated refrigerant flows through the furnace and a blower circulates the warm air throughout the home via the duct system
  3. Cool air from indoors is pulled from the ductwork. The cooled refrigerant returns to the outdoor unit. The process is repeated to warm the house.

Unique to heat pumps

Reversing valve: Allows the system to change the direction of refrigerant flow, enabling the same unit to provide both heating and cooling.

Snow stand: Raises the outdoor unit off the ground, helping reduce snow and ice buildup around the equipment during Alberta winters.

Single-zone ductless heat pump

For homeowners looking to heat and cool additional spaces or our small outbuildings

  2. The heat pump then brings the heated refrigerant through the indoor coil to heat the indoor air to warm the home. The cooled refrigerant returns to the outdoor unit. The process is repeated to warm the home.

Reversing Valve: Changes the direction the refrigerant flows, allowing the system to transfer heat from outside to inside the home

Snow Stand: Raises the unit off the ground preventing any snow or ice from building up below the unit and allowing the heat pump to function into freezing temperatures

Multi-zone ductless heat pump

For homeowners looking to heat and cool multiple zones in a house without ducts

Cooling operation

  1. In cooling mode, the heat pump works just like an air conditioner by removing unwanted heat from the home.
  2. The heated refrigerant flows towards the outdoor unit to get cooled.
  3. Like the AC System, the cooler refrigerant flows through the indoor coil, cooling the indoor air while absorbing the heat. This process is repeated to cool the home
  4. Each indoor unit can be controlled separately depending on the needs of the space.

Frequently asked questions about heat pumps

  • In many cases, yes. A central heat pump can integrate with existing ductwork and may replace a central air conditioner. Ductless systems operate independently and are often used to supplement comfort in specific areas.
  • Heat pumps are highly effective at cooling, but heating performance depends on outdoor temperatures. In Alberta, they are typically used as a cooling system and as supplemental or backup heat during milder conditions. During colder weather, a furnace or other backup heat source is often needed.
  • Heat pumps are generally most effective when outdoor temperatures are milder. In Alberta, they are commonly used during shoulder seasons and can work alongside a furnace when temperatures drop.
  • Heat pumps use electricity instead of burning fuel and move heat rather than generating it, which can help improve energy efficiency compared with some traditional heating systems.
  • Installation requirements can vary depending on your home type and location. In some cases, additional electrical or building-related requirements may apply. Your consultant can review these as part of the assessment process.
