For homeowners who only need cooling, an air conditioner remains a practical and effective solution. Today’s air conditioners are designed to use less energy while delivering dependable performance during Alberta’s hottest days.
Central air conditioner
Central air conditioners cool the entire home by circulating conditioned air through supply and return ducts. They are typically paired with a furnace, making them a popular choice for larger homes with existing ductwork.
Ductless air conditioner
Ductless air conditioners deliver targeted cooling where it’s needed most and are ideal for homes without ducts. Multiple units can be installed to cool different rooms or zones independently.
Heat pumps for heating and cooling
Heat pumps offer both cooling and heating in a single system, making them a versatile option for Alberta homes. In summer, they remove heat from indoor air to lower temperatures efficiently. During milder winter conditions, they can also provide heating support, helping reduce reliance on traditional systems.
Homes with ducts can install either a central heat pump or a ductless heat pump, while homes without ductwork typically install ductless systems.
Central heat pump
A central heat pump uses your home’s existing ductwork to provide consistent cooling throughout every room. During summer, it transfers heat from inside your home to the outdoors. When conditions allow, the system can reverse operation to bring warmth inside during cooler months.
This option is well suited for larger or multi‑storey Alberta homes that already have ducts in place.
Ductless heat pump
Ductless heat pumps—often called mini‑splits—are ideal for homes without existing ductwork or for targeted heating and cooling in specific areas. They can be installed as single‑zone systems for one room or multi‑zone systems to cover several spaces.
Ductless heat pumps work especially well alongside boilers, furnaces, or electric baseboard heaters to improve comfort year‑round.

- As of January 1, 2023, all permanently installed new air conditioning systems in detached 1-2 dwelling homes in the City of Vancouver must be able to provide both low-carbon heating and cooling, i.e. electric heat pumps. See the City of Vancouver website for more details.

- In most cases, yes. A central heat pump can be integrated into your existing system and even fully replace your air conditioner. A ductless heat pump won’t connect directly to your existing system, but it can be used to provide complementary heating and cooling in a specific space.
- It depends on the climate where you live, but in general, no. While there’s no temperature limit to a heat pump’s cooling ability, they become less effective and efficient at heating the colder it gets outside. On very cold days, you might want to switch to your furnace, which will likely be more efficient at low temperatures than your heat pump.
- Heat pumps run on electricity rather than by burning fossil fuels, which helps reduce their carbon footprint. They’re also more energy efficient than many resistance-based electric heating sources, such as furnaces and baseboard heaters.
