Heat pumps and air conditioners for Vancouver homes
We offer a range of cooling solutions to suit your home and the Lower Mainland climate. Energy Management Consultants (EMCs) consider all your cooling requirements, including your home’s age, size, insulation type, and whether it has air ducts. They also consider all regional by-laws and sustainability requirements.
Due to government regulations, homeowners in the City of Vancouver who wish to add a cooling system cannot purchase or install air conditioners and must opt for a heat pump.1
Heat pumps for heating and cooling
Heat pumps provide heating and cooling to keep your home cool throughout the summer and warm for much of the winter, depending on your climate. These highly efficient systems can help you reduce your energy consumption compared to traditional furnaces and air conditioners. Homes with air ducts can install either a central heat pump or a ductless heat pump, while homes without ducts must install a ductless heat pump.
Central heat pump
A central heat pump provides heating and cooling for an entire home using air ducts. It cools by extracting heat from indoor air and releasing it outside. It has a reversal valve that allows it to reverse this process in cool weather, bringing warm outside air indoors to heat the home.
Ductless heat pump
Ductless heat pumps, also known as ductless mini-splits, are an ideal choice for heating and cooling homes without air ducts. They pair well with a boiler or electric baseboard heaters to provide year-round heating and cooling. Mini-splits are available in single- and multi-zone configurations to heat and cool one room or multiple rooms.
Air conditioners for cooling
Air conditioners are an effective solution for homes that only need cooling. Modern air conditioners are more energy efficient, enabling you to reduce your cooling costs and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
Central air conditioner
Central air conditioners cool your entire home by circulating air through supply and return ducts. They are ideal for large, multi-storey homes with air ducts and furnaces for heating.
Ductless air conditioner
Ductless air conditioners are perfect for homes without ductwork that are looking for targeted cooling. You can install multiple ductless AC units for cooling anywhere you need it.

Frequently asked questions about home cooling systems
- As of January 1, 2023, all permanently installed new air conditioning systems in detached 1-2 dwelling homes in the City of Vancouver must be able to provide both low-carbon heating and cooling, i.e. electric heat pumps. See the City of Vancouver website for more details.
- We carry high-efficiency air conditioners from brands like Mitsubishi, Daikin, Lennox, Carrier, and Kinghome. We work with you to find the right make and model for your particular needs.
- In most cases, yes. A central heat pump can be integrated into your existing system and even fully replace your air conditioner. A ductless heat pump won’t connect directly to your existing system, but it can be used to provide complementary heating and cooling in a specific space.
- It depends on the climate where you live, but in general, no. While there’s no temperature limit to a heat pump’s cooling ability, they become less effective and efficient at heating the colder it gets outside. On very cold days, you might want to switch to your furnace, which will likely be more efficient at low temperatures than your heat pump.
- Heat pumps run on electricity rather than by burning fossil fuels, which helps reduce their carbon footprint. They’re also more energy efficient than many resistance-based electric heating sources, such as furnaces and baseboard heaters.
