What is water treatment?
Water treatment improves water quality, mainly by removing impurities, to make it suitable for everything from drinking to bathing. There are many different types of water treatment solutions. The right one for your home depends on where your water comes from, where you live, the plumbing in your house and the needs of the people who live there, including allergies, dietary criteria like salt restricted diets and more.
Do I need water treatment?
If you get your water from a private well, you’re responsible for ensuring it’s safe to drink and use. You need to remove impurities including calcium, magnesium, bacteria, iron, sulfur and tannin. Left untreated, these can have effects on your health, the operation of your plumbing system, and the colour, taste and smell of your water. Even if your water comes from a municipal system, you can still benefit from home water treatment. The Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality call for municipal treatment plants to filter out hazardous particles such as coal, pollen, sand, yeast, bacteria, dust and viruses for safety, but that doesn’t guarantee its taste, smell, colour or hardness.
