Whether you’re looking to turn your cottage into a second home or taking steps to escape the city this winter, it’s also a good idea to keep your investment protected through mechanical system upgrades and monitoring.

Managing a private water supply can be a challenge.

At Enercare we offer a variety of gas and electric water heaters to provide you with potable water for your cottage, no matter your water source. Based on the requirements of your space we may suggest a tank or tankless option:

  • Tank Water Heaters continue to be the best option for its on-demand feature – as soon as you turn on your hot water, it is there.
  • Tankless Water Heaters don’t require much space, and you only pay for the hot water that you use. However this also makes it a challenge for on-demand water requests, or when the need for hot water is required at two service points, like the shower and the dishwasher.

Water Filtration Basics

Ontario’s cottage country is one of the most popular places in North America requiring water filtration solutions. Water filtration will remove contaminants such as sediment, bacterial, dust, heavy metals and other chemicals to make water safe to drink. Based on your water source and concerns, you may want to select one of the following filtration options:

  • UV Filters are the most effective method for killing bacteria and work by destroying harmful micro-organisms without adding chemicals or changing your water’s taste/odour.

  • Sediment Filters work as a sieve to remove silt and sand, which often causes cloudy or dirty water and may cause blockage in your pipes.

  • Carbon Filters are the most common and remove unwanted tastes and odours, recommended when bacteria aren’t present in the water.

  • Iron Filters work to combat hardness and iron in water levels through a water softener, recommended for those whose water source comes from well water.

Cottage Cooling Solutions

Your cottage should be a retreat. The more time you spend there during the hot summer months, the more of a necessity cooling your space becomes. Consider ways to cool your cottage this upcoming summer for increased comfort and a better night’s sleep.

  • Centralized Air Conditioning
If your cottage has existing ductwork in good working order, a centralized air conditioning system may be the most affordable option, by using current ductwork to provide cooling throughout the cottage. This works by drawing in warm air, removing its heat and distributing it through the ducts and into your cottage.
  • Split Systems
If your cottage does not have any ductwork to support centralized cooling you may not want to undergo the expensive task of installing ducts for a central system. Ductless systems provide cooling through a sleek unit mounted on the wall by pulling air through an outdoor condenser and using an indoor blower to distribute cool air. Installation is mildly invasive, but it only requires a small hole at the point where the indoor component will be mounted. By placing these systems in separate rooms, you can have room-by-room temperature control and only using cooling where needed.

Heating Your Second Home

Cottage country is notorious for its harsh winters. Whether the home is heated by electricity, natural gas, propane or wood, having a cost effective and reliable heat source is crucial to your comfort.

  • Furnaces
Furnaces, or forced air systems, use electricity or burn propane or natural gas to establish a flame, which is then used to heat the heat exchanger to heat up the indoor air. Newer models of furnaces are more energy efficient, potentially saving you money on your utility bills. If your current heating system is over 10 years old, or if your cottage has a working ductwork system, call us to talk about upgrading your system with the latest state-of-the-art technology.
  • Boilers
Boilers heat up the water to provide hot water or steam which moves through pipes in the home and is dispersed through radiators, baseboard radiators or radiant floor systems. Boilers can work with natural gas, oil, electricity and wood and will generally use less fuel to heat your home, potentially lowering energy costs.
  • Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are an energy efficient way to provide heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Without a HVAC system in place, heat pumps use electricity to recycle heat energy from the air. Due to advanced filtration, they can also remove pollen, dust and odour.
  • Combination Systems
A Combination System is a single unit, primarily utilizing natural gas or propane to provide both domestic hot water and heating to your home.

Does your cottage use solar or geo-thermal exchange? We can tie into your existing equipment for a custom heat and hot water delivery system that will continue to draw on natural elements to provide energy efficient comfort.

The Luxury Getaway

Comfort is about more than just a cozy night with the family. Turn your cottage into a first-class getaway with upgrades that will have you wanting to move in full time:

  • Radiant floor heating
Using an existing energy efficient boiler, water is heated and then distributed through tubing under the floor to provide cost-effective heating – never worry about cold feet again!
  • Heated driveways
The worst part about your trip to the cottage is probably the commute, but if your cottage is under 5 ft of snow, coming and going can be an even bigger headache. Hydronic snow melting systems work similar to radiant floor heating by distributing hot water under through tubes under your home’s driveway.
  • Wine Chillers
Temperature and humidity control are crucial to a good glass of wine. Our HVAC systems can ensure controlled environments for the perfect pour every time.
